Proposta in quattro parti
Directed by Jean-Marie Straub, Danièle Huillet
Synopsis
"D. W. Griffith’s 1909 short film A Corner in Wheat, a Biblical tale of avarice, divine retribution, and the prolonged suffering of the masses, is the prelude to this political film essay. Straub-Huillet offer a dialectical montage of cause (capitalist greed) and effect (the poverty of the farmer and the urban underclass), and draw from excerpts of their earlier work: Moses und Aaron, Fortini/Cani, and From the Cloud to the Resistance." - MoMA

Review by Aksa ★★★
Throughout the film, Straub and Huillet incorporate excerpts from their earlier cinematic works, such as "Moses und Aaron," "Fortini/Cani," and "From the Cloud to the Resistance." These excerpts likely contribute to the film's overall message and aesthetic, enriching the narrative with their thematic and visual elements. Overall, "A Proposition in Four Parts" appears to be a thought-provoking and politically charged exploration of societal issues, using film as a medium to convey its message and engage the audience in a critical reflection on the consequences of capitalism and social inequality.

"os poetas
entre os mortais são aqueles que
cantando com gravidade
sentem o rastro dos deuses que se foram
seguem esse rastro
e assim traçam para os mortais
seus irmãos

entre os mortais
seria capaz de reconhecer
tal rastroé próprio dos rastros

Damnit. I was really thinking this might be the one where they finally made me communist, but the promise of a real visual dialectic does not play out. The concept is there...but it's honestly kinda drab in execution.

Straub/Huillet take their practice of quotations a step forward: instead of texts, here they quote a whole film by Griffith as well clips from their own work (in anticipation of Communists three decades later). A much more significant film than its reputation would have you believe, especially in its singular approach to a dialectical use (and not just view) of film history itself as the cinematic raw material.

Honestly, the Griffith short, which I had not seen before, is probably the best thing about this.
