Hold onto your martinis, 007 fans, because the next James Bond film, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is on track to break a rather unfortunate record: the longest gap between Bond movies in the franchise's history.
It's a stark contrast to the usual punctual delivery of high-stakes spy action we've come to expect. The still-untitled Bond 26, penned by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, has already spent over four years in development since Daniel Craig's final outing in No Time to Die. And with no new actor cast to fill Craig's shoes and no production start in sight, the next Bond film is facing a significant delay.
No Time to Die graced our screens in 2021. If Bond 26 doesn't arrive until late 2027, that would mean a six-year wait between installments. Should the release be pushed to 2028, the gap would stretch to an unprecedented seven years.
The current record, a six-year wait, was shared between License to Kill (1989) and GoldenEye (1995), and again between Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021). But here's where it gets controversial: The franchise is now under the control of Amazon MGM, with Villeneuve at the helm, and the pressure to reboot 007 'correctly' has only intensified. This shift in creative control, after Barbara Broccoli's long tenure, could be a major factor in the extended timeline.
Will Pierce Brosnan Return to James Bond?
One familiar face who might return to the Bond universe is Pierce Brosnan. The actor, who played Bond in four films from GoldenEye to Die Another Day, expressed interest in returning, not as 007, but in another capacity. He even joked about the possibilities, saying, “It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?”
When asked about playing a retired MI6 operative, Brosnan replied, “Sometimes you entertain it, and sometimes you just move on.”
And this is the part most people miss: The delay isn't just about finding the right actor or crafting the perfect script; it's also about navigating the new landscape of the film industry and the expectations of a global audience.
What do you think, Bond fans? Is the extended wait worth it for a truly exceptional Bond film? Or are you eager for the next adventure, regardless of the timeline? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
