Strong Winds Disrupt Greek Ferry Services on Saturday
Heavy winds have caused significant disruptions to ferry services across Greek seas on Saturday, leading to the cancellation of numerous ferry trips. The National Meteorological Service has issued a warning, predicting gale-force winds of up to 9 on the Beaufort scale in both the Aegean and Ionian Seas. This has resulted in a range of travel disruptions, affecting both mainland ports and island destinations.
Travelers are advised to stay informed about the latest ferry schedules and updates through local port offices and travel agencies. The Hellenic Coast Guard has reported the cancellation of morning ferry trips from Piraeus to the Cyclades and the East and North Aegean islands. Additionally, the Blue Star Chios ferry, which was set to depart in the afternoon, has also been canceled, impacting travel to popular destinations like Thira (Santorini), Anafi, Heraklion, Sitia, Karpathos, Diafani, Chalki, and Rhodes.
The Argosaronic Gulf has seen restrictions, allowing only conventional ferries to operate. At the Rafina port, while Marmari port on Evia remains operational, ferry services to the Cycladic islands of Andros, Tinos, and Mykonos have been canceled. Similar disruptions are reported at the Lavrio port, where morning sailings have been halted.
Furthermore, the Igoumenitsa – Lefkimmi – Corfu straits and the Rio – Antirrio ferry connection in the Gulf of Corinth have also been canceled due to the adverse weather conditions. The impact of these strong winds extends beyond the ports, as many city streets in affected regions have experienced flooding, hail, and heavy rainfall.
