Two men, including a convicted murderer, have been apprehended after allegedly escaping from an open prison on New Year's Day. This incident has sparked a review by the UK government, raising questions about the security measures in place at HMP Leyhill.
Matthew Armstrong, 35, and Daniel Washbourne, 40, were reported to have left the prison in South Gloucestershire during the evening of January 1st. Avon and Somerset police confirmed their arrests on Wednesday, with Armstrong being caught near a train station and Washbourne in Bristol city center.
But here's where it gets controversial... Armstrong, who was convicted of murder in 2009, is also suspected of committing a robbery the night before his escape. A spokesperson for the police force revealed that Armstrong allegedly forced his way into a home, threatened the occupants, and stole a phone and cash. This incident has led to further inquiries and his arrest on suspicion of robbery.
And this is the part most people miss... Washbourne, with a history of violence and false imprisonment, was initially taken to the hospital due to pre-existing injuries. However, he is now in police custody, adding another layer of complexity to this case.
Another man, aged 39, has also been charged with absconding from the same prison and will appear in court in February. The UK government has promised a review of the incident, with a junior minister stating that it will be conducted within 20 days.
