The Power of Seagrass Restoration
Seawilding, a Scottish charity dedicated to marine habitat restoration, has achieved an incredible feat. Their innovative project has successfully restored seagrass, a vital component of our oceans, with astonishing results. Eco Magazine reports that this community-led initiative has increased seabed coverage from a meager 10% to a remarkable 70%, and the survival rate is an astounding 97%!
But here's where it gets controversial... Seagrass, the ocean's only flowering plant, has been struggling to thrive due to various factors. The traditional method of sowing seeds had limited success. However, Seawilding's new approach, launched in 2024, involves a unique translocation process. They harvest seagrass shoots from existing 'donor' meadows and carefully transfer them to their ideal new homes.
In just five months, Seawilding has created an additional 0.3 hectares of seagrass, bringing the UK's seagrass levels close to their natural state. This project is now recognized as one of the most successful seagrass restoration efforts in the country.
